The purpose of carrying out a TM54 analysis is to allow designers to consider, and better understand, the implications of operational energy use at the design stage. There is often a mismatch between the expectations around the performance of new buildings (derived from Part L & EPC’s), and the reality of actual energy usage. This difference between the expected and realised energy performance is known as the Performance Gap.
In order to understand and minimise the performance gap, CIBSE TM54 was published in 2022 and aims to provide a methodology for estimating energy use of buildings at the design stage. It offers a prescriptive step by step calculation method and allows for energy usage that is not assessed under the current UK compliance tools.
We can produce a report following the above methodology with calculations having been carried out using estimated occupancy, heat gains and profiles (which will include the expected equipment you intend to use within the building). We show how much energy will be used in terms of kWh, alongside the estimated CO2 emissions.
Various scenarios can be calculated, such as showing the impacts of different building operating hours, differing heating and cooling setpoints, and whether controls will be used throughout the building (e.g. lighting controls).
